FW: An Interesting Insight into Decision Making

Well that a very interesting story indeed. There are several aspects of it to me:
 
- Developed and Developing
Most of the confusion and change in decision making happens in developing countries, developing thoughts, developing tools, developing life, developing situations. But if you see developed countries, developed thoughts, developed tools, and developed life the chance of mistakes keeps on reducing and reducing. Decisions are fixed. Very few things change. In this story several people would make several different decisions if they are still developing learning it. And they would make very few and good decisions when they have given some thought about it and they have developed through it.
 
- Learning
This brings me to a very interesting topic. What make a something rise from developing to developed. That is working out again and again on the topic and learn from it and not to commit same mistake again. Very few people would take a right decision first time. So it has to be the slow process of learning from different situations.
 
A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted. You should live several lives while reading it - by William Styra
 
- More people, more chaos (should not be true!)
If there are more people learning the same thing it is quite impossible to get the perfect decisions quickly as no one would like to listen and everyone would like to come up with perfect or imperfect solutions. The reasons behind this would be social mirrors which brings fear to our mind that you need to come up with the right solution every time or you are unable to prove yourself. This fear and hurry would right away stop the creativity and also the patience to listen to others. This is what is also could be a hasty decision as mentioned in the story. This also happens when different people are looking from different place in the situation. It would always be wise to give time to bring everyone at same level before hurry for a decision.

- Much complex life
When given the title of developing, this brings along with it lots of uncertainties, which brings fear of getting caught doing things wrong unlike first time right as being developed, which makes simple things complex in decision making and is the cause of most of stupid errors. This activates a chain reaction which would disturb the harmony in life, its simplicity.

- Sharpen the saw: Balancing developing and developed
As mentioned earlier knowledge is the key. Key to go over things when they don't even exists. Key to get rid of fear by knowing them earlier. Key to get to the creative part of it when it is not even their. Often surprises produces chaos. Developed things misses the elements of surprise, element of chaos. Its the choice to make a chaotic situation more chaotic by forcing imperfect decisions, by forcing the speed-up of the recovery.

PS: I sincerely request you to consider this a simple prose from me to improve my comprehension techniques and not to give someone a lesson.

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the  rest on the operational track.

The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?    

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make................

Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.
 
The great critic Leo Velski Julian who told the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be   made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

Alice, a Java-based interactive program that allows users to produce 3-D
computer animation images without the need for advanced level programming
skills has been created by a lab director at Carnegie Mellon University
(USA) in an effort to draw middle-school age girls to the computer science
field. Through the use of a computer mouse, young users can create stories,
outline the actions of characters or objects, and perform graphics programs
using simple commands, such as a drop and drag interface. CMU officials
claim Alice has been successful in teaching programming skills to female
students from middle school to college-age.

Logical Puzzle: 4 theifs and black/white hats.

4 criminals are caught and are to be punished. The Judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung. They agreed.


The 4 criminals are lined up on some steps (shown in picture). They are all facing in the same direction. A wall seperates the fourth man from the other three.

So to summarise :-
Man 1 can see men 2 and 3.
Man 2 can see man 3.
Man 3 can see none of the others.
Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initally don't know what colour hat they are wearing. They are told to shout out the colour of the hat that they are wearing as soon as they know for certain what colour it is.

They are not allowed to turn round or move.
They are not allowed to talk to each other.
They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Who is the first person to shout out and why?

PS: There is no trick to the question, just logical deduction.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) by Burkhard Stubert ;)

There was a story about Tunisian Student; This story pinpoints : emotional intelligence (EQ).
I think the student will make his way, because he is emotionally
intelligent - not only rationally intelligent. EQ is a much better
predictor for future success at school, university, or work than IQ is.
Numerous studies show this. There is a simple experiment with four year
olds. They are given a choice. They can eat a chocolate right now or
they can do something for 15 minutes (e.g., building a house with Lego
bricks or listening to a story) and get two chocolates. Guess! Those who
take the second choice with the two chocolates have much better grades
at schools. Well, school is a lot about delayed gratification: learn for
hours, days, or even months to get the gratification for your work much
later. But it will also give you a big boost forward in your career or
life. Isn't this amazing?

If you want to learn more about EQ, you should read the two books by
Daniel Goleman: "Emotional Intelligence" and "Working with Emotional
Intelligence". I have read the first one in India already. I am
currently reading the second one and drawing a lot of comparisons with
my working life. The second book also points out why trust and faith is
so essential.

I have another very interesting reading for you: James Surowiecki, "The
Wisdom of Crowds. Why the Many AreSmarter than the Few and How
Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies, and Nations."
This one will change your thinking and your acting completely. Fill a
glass with candies and let some 30 or more people estimate how many
candies are in the glass. The people are only allowed to look through
the glass. They are, of course, not allowed to take out any candies. The
average of the estimates will be very close to the real number if not
exactly right. If you repeat this experiment several times, you will
also find out that no individual is constantly better than the group and
that typically no individual gives a better estimate than the group.
This kind of group IQ works only if the members of the group work
independently. It does not matter whether all the members are experts in
the subject matter.

A group of 25 people somewhere in Idaho was better in guessing the
results of US federal and state elections over the last years than any
professional institution. They were just normal people. The number of 25
people is far from being representative. But nevertheless, their guesses
are more accurate than that of the professional augurs. Amazing, or?
With lots of examples, Surowiecki explains the consequences for daily
working life and how to exploit these findings about group IQ.

With my limited knowledge; when i thought in similar direction; extrapolating this concept for generation of better ideas within the team. I found that best ideas can be genertaed within the team or project by brain storming sessions by team members.
The most important prerequisit and also the assumption behind is that all team members should be brought to a common platform. Only then we can really achieve
the best solutions and products and concepts.
